The French Riviera is less demanding from a navigational point of view and unless there’s a mistral, the weather conditions are stable. Anchor bays are scarce, however harbours and some rather chic marinas in particular can be found in abundance. However the allure of these sailing waters can be discovered on land. Especially the old city centres in lots of locations have preserved their charm and unique flair in spite of jet set, exclusivity, stars and starlets. Attractive bars and sophisticated nightlife await the visitor everywhere – from the “Star’s & Bars” in Monte Carlo to “Bar du Sube” in St. Tropez. Of course all the numerous celebrity events can be followed best from the charter yacht like the Formula One races or the film festival in Cannes – these are the times when almost everything is fully booked in the luxury and mega-yacht sector and mooring spaces have become a rarity.
But the true sailor’s heart beats higher in the anticipation of a different event:
What originally started out as a classic regatta in St. Tropez round a buoy called La Nioulargue, has long since developed into a race circuit of the most beautiful classic yachts under sail and tours the Mediterranean Sea in summer as the Penerai Classic Yachts Challenge. The first races in Europe start near the Voiles d’Antibes in June, in September everyone meets for the Régates Royales in Cannes. Lots of Classic Weeks are also organized outside of the Panerai Challenge. People lucky enough to spot Dennis Connor and other America’s Cup luminaries in the cockpits of classic yachts can’t escape a touch of nostalgia at the sight of shining brass and gleaming mahogany.
