The Isla de la Juventud, very popular among Yacht Charter sailors, is the largest island of the Cuban Canarreos archipelago in the Caribbean Sea. About 90,000 people live here, the largest city is Nueva Gerona. The name of the island been changed frequently over the centuries: Christopher Columbus called it La Evangelista. At the times of the pirates it was called Parrot Island. In the era of dictator Baptista she served as a prison.under the name Isla de los Pinos (Pine Island).
After the Cuban revolution development of agriculture has been forced on the island. These were thousands of young people, mostly from third world countries, on the island to work or to learn. In 1978 the island was then renamed the Isla de la Juventud – the Isle of Youth. But the island has even been known as a treasure island, pirate island, and gold island.
A wide variety of different landscapes and beautiful beaches are to be found on the Isla de la Juventud – as well as protected nature reserves, some of the best diving spots in the Caribbean and several historic sites worth a visit.
