The holiday resort of Mariehamn is the capital and with about 11.000 inhabitants also the only town of the Åland Islands, a self-governed province in the Southwest of Finland. The ferry port plays an important role in the barge traffic between the Finnish and Swedish harbours. In former times large windjammer-fleets and some of the famous Flying P-Liners have been stationed here. The “Pommern” lies as a museum ship in the harbour.
Nature and nature protection play an essential role on the Åland Islands. Apart from coniferous and deciduous trees, even several orchid species grow here. Lots of white-tailed eagles and other types of bird circle above the islands, elks and dears live in the forests. Around 50 plant species and almost all animals are protected.
