An exciting beat lies further south: The Port Les Minimes in La Rochelle is the second-largest yacht harbour in Europe (the largest one is Port Camargues). Thanks to the Gulf Stream, the climate here is relatively mild. The region of Charente-Maritime is home to almost all large French boat builder’s yards. The over 100 years old town used to live and still lives on shipping – accordingly the whole culture, the townscape, the decoration in bars and restaurants is very maritime. Charter sailors should really make time for an extended visit of the old town – in order to do that they can moor directly in Vieux Port in the centre. The sailing waters are well protected by the offshore islands of Ile d’Oléron and Ile de Re. Port of calls, absolutely worth one’s while, are the picturesque village of St. Martin on the Ile de Re with numerous restaurants in the harbour, Saint Denis d’Oléron, the car-free islet of Ile d’Aix with a large anchor bay – and the ones travelling upstream, can discover a town rich in tradition and with lots historic flair in Rochefort.
